Readers Respond: What's Your Vision for New York?

From the article: 9/11/01 - 9/11/11
After many years of planning, New York City is rebuilding on the World Trade Center site that was destroyed by terrorists on September 11, 2001. Even though construction is well underway, some critics question the building designs and dispute the master plan. What's your vision? Should New York build new Twin Towers, just like the ones that were destroyed? Should the City implement plans designed by top-name architects? Or, should parks and green spaces take the place of towering office buildings?

I think the world trade centers should be rebuilt the same to respect and honor the people who died on 9-11, to respect their memory.

Green Reflection Park

I think that we should create a park as a place where people could go to reflect on 9/11 and perhaps a transportation hub which is filled with activity. I don't think more office towers are really necessary. Perhaps the space should have a radical new use.

No vacancy!

If fully constructed I would never bring my business into the building of freedom tower 1,2,3 or 4. Try for smaller office buildings that are not so easy targets for them to target because it could happen again. And how many more lives will America take away from loved ones ??? Did anyone even think of that? Smaller buildings equal less chances for them to take down.

Re-Build - We shall not be beaten

We do not respond to terrorism - for that would be a waste of the precious lives of so many. This should never be forgotten.

Keep at it!!!!!!!!

I think, a 15yr old girl, that we should keep at it. We should show the world we won't be taken down so easily. Not rebuild the twin towers, but build new ones. Stronger ones. Even if the design isn't all that special, it looks bold and great. I feel pride just looking at what will be. We may not have the tallest building in the world but who cares, the freedom tower is the biggest in the United States. And to me, as a U.S.citizen, that's all that matters.

@ Guest Pete R.

Sure Pete - that may well be what they want, and if they do want just that - then it seems to me they are entitled to let the world know about their feelings. I write from "Across the Pond" in the UK - our 7/7 was not so numerous but to the Families it was as devastating. One of the Bombs went off near London University I was shaken - because I have friends there - but I understand how Americans feel this must never be forgotten.

What happens at ground zero?

Right away I was thinking that a big fat mosque was going to be built there or at least close by. But I hope as a last resort that Obama will put a stop to that building. Once the new twin towers are finished, New York is back. But the people that lost their lives will not be back.

Lest We Forget - REBUILD!!

We must re-build. We must honor all who died that fateful day by continuing to put forth the effort, strength, and courage they all showed the world and the terrorist groups that plague every land throughout the world today. Stand up and show our strength and patriotism. THIS LAND IS OUR LAND! Build them just a little higher than before, stronger than before, and with more safeguards than before (such as wider stairwells). This evil that tried to strike us down on 9-11-2001 will see we will not be defeated. "Don't Tread On Me." The longer we go without replacing what they took form us, the longer they believe they have defeated us. And now all that is coming of the mosque dealings and this Imam Rauf dividing and threatening us even further that if we stop him from building the mosque that so many oppose, especially those who lost loved ones on 9-11, "explosions" will occur. He does not bring unity and peace. They, terrorist murderers, stomped on us. We MUST fight back. "Let's roll."

Freedom Tower

I think the design of the building should have been better. It's much too plain. We also showed that we are cowards by not building what we want. Look at the building that is now the world's tallest building. That should be us. The world's tallest building should be in the USA, land of the free, home of the brave. We could have done a better job. We worry too much about what others think. Just do it!

Twin Towers

I think that the buildings shouldn't be so high - Height isn't necessary for me. A place with green space is more useful.

A more enlightened idea...

The twin towers were outstanding buildings which drew a group of some of the best brains of the country. What America lost in brainpower can hardly be imagined. Don't let the best all congregate in one place again, they can still be in touch with the web and skype. People adore green spaces more than they adore skyscrapers. Don't just plant trees, create an indigenous space which will attract the bird and insect and small mammal life of 300 years ago. This will do more for the soul of America than hands full of money and could be the start of a movement towards reinstating nature as she was. I promise this will resonate with your deepest sense of how life ought to be. And it will spawn businesses countrywide. Not only that, regreening the planet gives international opportunities to local businesses. Just try it.

A bad idea

The only reason the body count at the WTC attack was so much lower than the first estimates is that the buildings were (thankfully) not fully occupied. Not rented and not rentable -- then, pre-depression, pre-attack. There is NO chance that all that target office space will rent now, and if this building goes up, a neighborhood previously, pre-attack, gloomy and depressing, will be reconstructed even more so, even less integrated with the surrounding city. While I agree the transport center is a good idea, the rest of the space should be used for mixed income housing and a green memorial park. Lower Manhattan does not need any more office towers.

Full Steam Ahead!

The news media has put way too much focus on the construction delays. Artistic conflicts and funding issues are an expected part of any major project, and it's truly amazing how much the World Trade Center planners have accomplished. Remember where we started!
—Guest ArchiGuy

Why So Many Offices?

They'll never be able to rent out all the office space in those skyscrapers. The World Trade Center will seem desolate, especially after work hours. I think the new buildings should include apartments and condos. The World Trade Center complex will feel more vibrant if people actually live there.

Rebuild the Twin Towers!

The designers should restore the old Twin Tower buildings, exactly the way they were before. That's what the survivors and the families of victims want. See this site: http://www.wtc2011.com
