Color Choices

I would think using a darker colors would make the house seem smaller. I also like seeing the use of 3 colors on a house. I feel it adds dimension without being overly done.

Use 3 Colors

I've seen some gorgeous gingerbread Victorian homes in a town near here and they all used at least three colors. Two from the same color family (sage siding and dark green roof and trim) then added a very bright pinkish purple to the detail. It really popped out at you from the deep set front yard.

I'm picking colors for my foursquare too

I have a similar house, also tall and square, built around 1890. It's not as elaborate as the bungalow in the picture. I've been driving around and looking at colors on similar houses and I've found some I really like. Coincidentally, we also will be putting a new roof on in a few weeks, and we're going to coordinate the roof and paint colors so it all goes together. I've just about settled on a two-tone sage green body color with the darker sage green on the ground floor and lighter above. We're going to add a wide trim board separating the two colors. All the trim will be in a very creamy off white with a bit of yellow in it. I still need to pick an accent color for the front door and some areas of trim and I'm thinking about going very bold with that - maybe periwinkle or burnt orange. There is a color called "raisin" that's halfway between a dark brown and a burgundy - very rich. That would also be a good accent color. My advice: drive around and see what you like.
