My House:

My house is located in Louisville, KY. I have been told that it is about 88 years old. It is two stories with a basement and attic. There is a small two car tandem garage. The driveway is lined with stone walls as well as the stairway leading to the front door. It is about 2,400 square feet.

My Puzzle:

I am not sure what style of house we have and what color we should paint the outside. What are some traditional fireplace materials for this time period? I really want to stay true to the character of our home. What materials are right for the house? I was told that the pocket door outside the back door was used for the milk man deliveries.

Advice

There seems to be a mix between old and new in the floor plan. I cannot find a trace of the original materials used for decor even though we have done demo in many rooms.

Jackie Craven, Architecture Guide, says:

What an interesting and beautiful house! The high front gable and the eyebrow windows remind me of a Cotswold Cottage. Here's a nice example of the style submitted by another reader: English Cottage Revival. However, it's unusual to find a cottage revival home with such decorative Beaux Arts details around the door. Like many architects, the designer of your home combined a variety of styles to create something original.

Regardless of the style, the brick is lovely. When you speak of choosing paint colors, I assume you are asking about the trim only. (It would be a shame to paint over the brick!)
