Front of the house...excuse the peeling paint

My House:

Our home is located in sunny So Cal in the city of roses, Pasadena. Built in 1958, our home is begging for some serious upgrades, but before we started we wanted to know what style our home is?! We look up and down the street and all we see are mostly traditional styles homes. It drives me nuts every time I pull into the driveway and see the home that I was born in and currently now raise my own children in, but have no clue as to its architectural style. Someone? Anyone? Help?

My Puzzle:

What architectural style is my home? Why did there used to be rocks on the roof? Why was there a large 10x15 open garden space in the middle of the house that was bordered by the master bedroom, living room, and dining room?

Advice

  • Would a modern interior fit the exterior?
  • It's been suggested to me to put a white window frame/border around the front window that matches the other window. Is that a good idea?
  • What kind of landscaping would be conducive to the style of the home? I was thinking succulent/dessert/drought resistant...
  • What exterior paint color would you suggest?

Jackie Craven, Architecture Guide, says:

The age and location of your home are important clues. I think you have a California Ranch home with wonderful touches of mid-century Desert Modernism. Rocks were often incorporated into the design of these homes. Desert style landscaping would be ideal. Also think "desert" when you choose your colors.
