My House:
It is a single family home, 1-story, built in 1924. It is in Southern California, in Torrance, which was a big railroad town back in the day. I don't think there are any unusual features, but then again, I really don't know much about houses.
My Puzzle:
What style house is this? I think over the years, people have done such terrible things to it, that I don't know what the original style was anymore....Are these kitchen cabinets original? Or did someone add them over the years?
Advice
- What should I do with the outside to make it more era-specific? The trim was added on by one of the previous owners.
- What should I do with the kitchen cabinets? Keep them or rip them out with something new?
I've responded to another reader on this page (link):
Jackie Craven, Architecture Guide, says:
Your house really does look similar to the Mid-Century Modern House submitted by another reader. The flat roof has interesting lines, like a small parapet. The siding appears to be stucco. Perhaps your home is a Spanish-inspired bungalow. Here are a couple other small houses with a Spanish flair: The kitchen cabinets might have been added in the mid-twentieth century, but their simple style is appropriate for your streamlined home. To save on renovation costs, you could simply give the cabinets a fresh coat of paint and new knobs.
