An Emergency Structure for Haiti

Reader Submissions: Design an Emergency Shelter

From FrenkJMoreno

About the Shelter

A very preliminary concept for at least 4 adults.

Tent-like wooden structure, built with 2X4's bolted or nailed together, set on top of a wood platform sheathed with plywood.

The shelter would include 4 built-in twin beds and a counter which would include a two burner stove, a small ice-box and a sink. Cold water to shelter would be provided from pipes connected to external water source. Water from sink would drain to an external harvester. The roof overhangs would provide shade and as well as keep drain water away from wall and windows. Interior walls need not be covered.

How It's Made

Roofs would be covered with corrugated sheet metal, external walls with plywood. All wood would be treated to resist fungus and moisture but painted with elastomeric paint.

All components can be built and assembled anywhere, including on-site by local residents. I estimate two persons could assemble a shelter in a single 10 hour day, given that drawings, material and tools would be available and proven to work.

Advice

  • The shelter should include a table that can be folded and stored within the shelter and used by setting up near the twin beds which would be used as seats.
  • The underside of beds would be enclosed to provide storage space.
  • The shelter would be ventilated via windows and door.
  • A raised roof ridge could be incorporated to provide ventilation above.
  • All walls and roofs could be assembled off-shore and sent to Haiti for assembly.
