About My House

Our home is on the National Historic Registry as the Joseph Stone house. Located in Auburn, MA the home was built c. 1729 The home was originally finished with just the rooms on right side of the chimney. The left side was a lean-to which was built in later for expanded living space.

Cape Cod Features

The central chimney is just as described. One large chimney base in cellar takes up about 1/3 of the area downstairs. It is compiled of very large rocks stacked up one on top of the other with no mortar. Each room upstairs as you walk in a circle has a gorgeous very large fireplace. The "Common Room" or main 1729 room has a newer fireplace with a bee hive oven and great paneling over and around fireplace area with cupboards above. The floors are original wide wood planks which were hand planed and set with hand made nails.

Lessons Learned

  • It is very hard to find supplies to repair any damages to the home. Learning about our options and trying to keep any restoration period specific has been challenging...but also a very rewarding learning experience.
