About My House

Our house was completed in Sept. 7, 1939 at a cost of $9,766.66. We have the 4-page original itemized bill of sale. Custom designed for George Spoerl family, prominent business man in Allegheny County, MD. Have 8 original blueprints. The Spoerls had two sons, Louis and John, and John is only survivor. Mr. Spoerl died in 1966. Mrs. Edith Spoerl lived in the house until her death in May 1997. We are 2nd owners. House is located in LaVale, MD on the historic National Road (National Hwy/Rte. 40) west of Cumberland. The home is in its original state except for windowed/screened sun room, formerly open porch on southwest side. .

Cape Cod Features

One story-and-a-half brick on 1st floor and siding on 2nd; steep pitched roofs on house, sun room, garage, and 5 dormers; working fireplace in living room; double-flue chimneys on each end of house; 2,600 sq. ft. living space; three bedrooms; full bath on 2nd floor and one-and-a-half bath on 1st floor; den; dining room; sizable kitchen; two-stall attached garage; pillars on 4 corners of portico at front entrance; 1 rear house/basement entrance plus entrance on each end of sunroom; 14-inch solid poured concrete foundation; gas fired computerized hot-water boiler w. recessed radiators beneath windows; central AC upstairs and downstairs; flagstone walkways and patio; large 200' X 150' flat lot; historic style street lights along National Hwy; new roof; 37 new triple-pain vinyl windows; 5 new insulated exterior doors; 12" insulation added to attic in sun room and main house; and house recently pressure cleaned.

Lessons Learned

  • Dormers and steep-pitched roofs can cause snow to accumulate in areas where the valleys meet. Melting and freezing can fill up rain gutters, clog downspouts, and create ice dams with inside damage. Damage is in process of being repaired.
  • Replacing the steep pitched roof can be time consuming and expensive, (ie 4 roofers spent 13 days on our roof).
  • As people begin downsizing from 5-7,000 sq. foot, high cost homes, an 1,800-2,500 sq. foot Cape Cod home is perfect for two people. We absolutely love our home.
