Why I Wrote This Book

The objectives behind publishing this text book are to help architecture and design students see beyond flatness, appreciate mass vs void, and to become more visually conversant with the vocabulary of form and space. More importantly, this book intends to encourage and promote the concept of "Learn-by-Doing" and without the fear of making mistakes.

An Excerpt From My Book

"After thirty years of teaching art and interior design, I realized that I needed to share my experiences with colleagues and students from all design disciplines with a non-traditional text that more closely resembles the creative process. The one chronic problem many learners and even practitioners of design face is the periodic obstacle created by "mental blocks." These blocks occur when the artists find themselves unable to think fluently, to generate ideas spontaneously, or to be sufficiently observant to 'see' design options that might emerge. This book is intended to help the learner overcome these obstacles."

The work and exercises shown in this book have been tested over time and developed in real class settings with first year students of art and design over a twelve-year-period in universities around Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.

Each illustration is accompanied by a brief description or instruction. The instructions are diverse and flexible enough to adapt to many art and design classroom settings.

They are designed to entice learners to be ‘free-thinkers’ and to encourage them to experiment freely by removing them from the self-imposed constraints of imitation and copying.

“I hope the users of this book will immerse themselves in the total creative process of observing, seeing, understanding, interpreting, and creating a new.”
