About My Bungalow
Built by owner Walter and Nina Armstead in 1920. Walter was a waterman as was his father Cap. Jean Armstead. Cap. Jean's house is located 1/4 mi at horn harbor on Chesapeake Bay.
Favorite Details
Very regal and only 1800 sq ft. with 9 ft ceilings, long leaf heart pine flooring. Living room has a dog leg stairwell to second floor. Three bedrooms, originally four bedrooms. First house to have battery-operated lights, indoor plumbing, and insulation in Peary Va. Bathtub dated on bottom in cast iron, 1940.
Lessons Learned
- Lose the shingles and install stand and seam roofing. I lost 50% in a hurricane. This was good for me - I had completed the tear out stage on the second floor. My insurance company only paid 90%. Shingles are '50s and '60's stuff and more work in the long run
