About My Bungalow

We bought our house a little over a year ago. It is located in Holyoke, Massachusetts. In our neighborhood it seems as though every house next to us was built around the same time. Our house is listed as a bungalow. It was built in 1930. It has 1600 square feet and then an additional 1000 feet in the finished basement....in need of a remodel.

There is one built in hutch in the dining room. The dining room and living room are part of one big room, with a bit of a divider from painted beams.

The kitchen is a good size. A half bath and spare room complete the bottom floor. We have flagstone running around outside

Favorite Details

I love the feel of this house. There are big windows in the living and dining room. Wood everywhere. Painted in the living room and not painted in the kitchen. My husband loves the detail in the wood work. The house takes on a warm feel, it is hard to explain. It might not be the biggest home, but the charm is wonderful. We are working on fixing it up. The hard wood floors in the living room and dining area were redone. Original red maple floors. Nice light color, with a slight warm red tone. The previous owners put knotty pine upstairs in one room that has built in book shelves and on the walls in the landing.....I think the knotty pine is growing on me. Anyhow I am constantly wondering if we truly have a bungalow or craftsman home....any help would be great.

Lessons Learned

  • Just love what you have. We are a family of three and we manage just fine. It isn't the size, but how you bring the home to life. If you work on making it beautiful and spruce it up with paint, the rewards are enormous. We are adding some crown molding and we had our floors refinished and what a difference. Enjoy the house and don't always think of the size, but start making the space you have spectacular...and a show stopper.

Congratulations on the purchase of your bungalow! Bungalows of this period often had Arts & Crafts details, and the natural woodwork really is beautiful.
