The developers have not yet chosen a lead architect, and construction will not begin for several years. However, preliminary sketches for the Park51 Community Center promise a sophisticated 16-story building that combines Islamic motifs with modernist ideas.

At night, light will glimmer through the lattice walls. Developers say that the Park51 Community Center will glisten like an illuminated honeycomb. But the architectural renderings have received mixed reviews.

Reviewers Comment on Park51:

  • New York magazine: Dream Mosque
"The sleek, generic new renderings of Park51 don't tell us anything about why it should be built there."
  • The Huffington Post: Park51 As Global Architecture
"The most recent conceptual images compellingly show a building that, if built, could be positioned amongst some of the finest examples of global architecture."
  • The New Republic: The Secret of Park51
"These drawings are marketing tools. They are not architectural designs."
  • The Washington Post: A Literally Enlightened Building
"...in the middle of one of the most shameful chapters in the civic and intellectual life of America, Park51 released three drawings, which show a scrupulously contemporary building, conversant in the latest design trends, drenched with light and transparent to the world."
