Early plans for reconstruction on Ground Zero called for a soaring skyscraper called Freedom Tower, which would be the tallest in the world. To achieve that height, designers gave the building a tall, thin spire. Even with this spire, however, the planned Freedom Tower will not outrank skyscrapers and observation towers in other parts of the world.
This chart compares the heights of some of the world's tallest buildings and towers. From left to right:
- Empire State Building (New York, USA)
- Taipei 101 Tower (Taipei, Taiwan)
- Eiffel Tower (Paris, France)
- CN Tower (Toronto, Canada)
- Shanghai World Financial Centre (Shanghai, China)
- Burj Dubai (Dubai, UAE)
- Canton Tower (Guangzhou, China)
- Freedom Tower
