Dating from the 1850s, the Mermaid house was present on the peninsula when Sir Clough Williams-Ellis began building Portmeirion. For many years it was used to house village staff. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis dressed up the cottage with an imposing metal canopy. Palm trees, kept alive by warm ocean breezes, create the illusion that we are in sunny Italy... not in wet and windy North Wales.
