Architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have developed a design plan to transform the old power station once again, creating a new, expanded Tate Modern. The project is planned for completion in time for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

Design Plans for the Tate Modern

  • A new North/South route will lead from the Millennium Bridge through the building to Southwark
  • A new façade of perforated brick lattice will complement the original structure and will allow light to glow through
  • Relocated transformers, natural ventilation, and passive design will yeild greatly improved energy efficiency
  • Enormous oil tank chambers beneath the old power station will serve as a foundation for the new structure and also provide performance space
