Lyndhurst began as a country villa in the "pointed style," but over the course of a century it was shaped by the three families who lived there. In 1864-65, New York merchant George Merritt doubled the size of the mansion, transforming it into a grand Gothic Revival estate. He coined the name Lyndhurst after the Linden trees that were planted on the grounds.
