On the morning of September 11, 2001, nineteen terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda, an international Sunni Islamic movement headed by Osama bin Laden, hijacked four American commercial passenger planes from airports in the USA. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The third plane crashed into the Pentagon, headquarters of the United States Department of Defense in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane was headed toward Washington, DC, but crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers and members of the flight crew attempted to retake control.
