From Edward:

"Since we are dealing with a ranch style home, why not add a nice big country porch. The porch could run the whole length of the front of the house, with the main area near the entrance and the bay window. This would really dress up the boring front facade and it would be a nice place for a couple of rockers or a porch swing.

The living room light problem can be easily solved with the addition of some skylights. Since it is a single story home, this is a great solution.

Instead of widening the walkway in the front make it a winding path running through your new landscaping. The new landscape could be comprised of ornamental grasses and hostas and a few interesting ornamental trees, such as Japanese maples or weeping cherry."

From Linda:

"Since a budget for the house updates is not indicated I will suggest changes that are at minimum costs. A possible problem with the entry ice is roof water runoff not properly channeled away from the area. I would first check to see if gutters and leaders are in tact and directing water away from the entry. A gutter may have to be installed if one doesn't exist. If a roof extension is necessary, consider some type of decorative columns to support the added roofing.

Your local nursery can suggests slow growing evergreen bushes to improve landscape and minimize upkeep. Bayberry and junipers are attractive. Bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, etc. are a good way to add flowers without a need to plant every spring.

Warm colors add a sense of invitation to the front of the home, perhaps one that will echo or enhance the color of the stone facia. White with dark shutters give a "defensive" impression. An enlargement of the bay window will involve some expense. Expanded floor to ceiling mullioned windows would open the way to more light but less privacy and would keep to the original design.

Another possibility is adding skylights or "sunspots" as ranch structure will usually allow for easy installation. This will bring more light and retain privacy.

Please be aware that these are only suggestions and without firsthand knowledge of the structure I cannot be held responsible for applied use of any observation."
