I am not altogether sure. But I do believe that in the latter part of the 1800's and early 1900's classical styles were returning. Such styles as Neoclassical and Colonial Revival combined the styles of earlier Georgian and Federal houses. It was becoming more efficient to build houses not a as elaborate as the splendid Victorian.
