Foursquare With A Flourish

The Mystery   |  Reader Responses

A reader writes :

It was not unusual for families to modify their mail-order homes by adding porches or modifing details like your dormers. Early on, Sears would allow home buyers to make alterations to the interior floor plan and exterior details before the house parts were shipped. The stone ashlar treatment around your porch is typical of the era.

For a floorplan or close approximation of your exterior, try looking in Houses by Mail : A Guide to Houses from Sears, Roebuck and Company by Katherine Cole Stevenson, H. Ward Jan
