"My wife and I are purchasing a farmhouse with an original structure (now the kitchen) built in 1860. The front part of the house was added at a later date. I believe that the original house was a small simple rectangular house built on a foundation but with no basement. I have two questions:

1) What were most likely the construction techniques of the original house and what am I likely to find underneath recent remodels?

2) What style would you call the house as a whole?"
