Mystery House #8
Mail Order House?

The Mystery | Some Clues  | Answers

Is this a Sears mail order house?
Copyright © Phil Bidwell

Phil from New York State, USA sends us this mystery:

All the local folklore had it that this home is a Sears kit, but I'm beginning to wonder - I have searched out Sears catalogs from the period (1910 - 1915) and haven't seen this model. I'm looking for further information including a scan of the Sears Catalog listing this home, should it indeed be a Sears home.

The house was built in 1914 a few hundred feet from a former rail depot. Certainly many homes from this era were built from kits sold by Sears and Roebuck, Aladdin Homes, Montgomery Wards and other mail order companies. However, Phil has not been able to locate the original catalog listing or plans for this house.

Using a home design graphics program, he drew up a set of floor plans. Does the style of the house seem familiar? As you look at the floor plans, do you recognize the layout of the rooms? Use this easy form to send your comments and ideas.
