Tsunami Reconstruction

By Jackie Craven, About.com

On December 26, 2004, a series of earthquakes caused tsunamis -- killer waves -- on the western coast of Northern Sumatra, Andaman Islands, and Nicobar Islands. Countries as far away as Somalia and Kenya were affected. More than 150,000 people died, and over two and a half million people were forced from their homes.

Within hours of the unfolding tragedy, two organizations -- Worldchanging and Architecture for Humanity -- joined forces to launch a tsunami reconstruction effort in Asia and East Africa.

Contributions in the form of money, pro-bono design services, and material donations help build basic shelter, schools, and medical clinics. The reconstruction efforts are using a holistic and sustainable approach to create living, growing communities.
