Before he transformed the nation, Abraham Lincoln took on another type of renovation.
Under his direction, the Lincoln Home in Springfield, Illinois changed from a modest 1½-story cottage into the 2-story homestead we see today. The family left Springfield for the White House, but probably intended to return to their remodeled home. Unfortunely, history had other plans.
