There's something positive about starting off a new year with new construction. Excavation for the tower foundation of New York City's
Brooklyn Bridge began on this day, January 3, in 1870. The project took years to complete and also took the life of designer-engineer
John Augustus Roebling. Nevertheless, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world for awhile, and was the first to use steel wire instead of iron. New techniques and new construction are great ways to begin any new year.
