The city of Providence, Rhode Island depends on the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier. Completed almost half a century ago, this public works project uses an even older technology for preventing floods. Way back in the 1800s, Jeremiah Burnham Tainter devised a movable barrier now known as a Tainter gate. The hurricane barrier over the Providence River has three Tainter Gates still in use today and still protecting the people and property of Rhode Island's capital city.
