Open Tainter Gate at Fox Point Hurricane Barrier in Providence, Rhode IslandYet again, high winds and storm surges are battering the northeast U.S. How do the major cities cope?

The city of Providence, Rhode Island depends on the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier. Completed almost half a century ago, this public works project uses an even older technology for preventing floods. Way back in the 1800s, Jeremiah Burnham Tainter devised a movable barrier now known as a Tainter gate. The hurricane barrier over the Providence River has three Tainter Gates still in use today and still protecting the people and property of Rhode Island's capital city.
