Photo courtesy of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.In 2003 we reported media buzz about the struggles to build a new World Trade Center complex on Ground Zero in New York City. The New York Times and other papers described clashes and conflicts between architects and developers. Daniel Libeskind's 2002 plan was apparently not what developer Larry A. Silverstein had in mind.

Enter architect David Childs, nearing retirement after decades with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), a firm already familiar to Silverstein. Since 2003, the design of One World Trade Center has been rethought—several times. The nation has come a long way, and so has Ground Zero construction. In 2012 we can report that progress has been made. 1 WTC is nearing completion and now the highest skyscraper in New York City. Maybe next year David Childs will be able to fully retire.
