Celebrate Wright's Guggenheim

By October 21, 2011

Guggenheim Museum by Frank Lloyd Wright Frank Lloyd Wright's amazing Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City first opened its doors on October 21, 1959. With a six-story spiraling ramp, the Guggenheim is a hallmark example of hemicycle design . At the center, an open rotunda offers views of artwork on several levels.

Frank Lloyd Wright, who was known for his self-assurance, said that his goal was to "make the building and the painting an uninterrupted, beautiful symphony such as never existed in the World of Art before." Early sketches of the Guggenheim suggest that Wright originally planned a more colorful building than the one we see today.
