Can architecture express the spirit of peace? We often speak of war memorials, triumphal arches, and heroic monuments. But structures like these focus on battles, victories, and the settlement of conflicts. Why aren't more buildings about tolerance, cooperation, and simple human kindness?
Each year on September 21, the United Nations marks the International Day of Peace. In honor of the day, here are a few approaches to peaceful design:
- Shown above: Bagsvaerd Church in Denmark. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jørn Utzon found inspiration in clouds.
- United Nations Building in New York City. The official business of diplomats takes place in the sleek Secretariat building designed by Le Corbusier.
- Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright wanted this Unitarian Church to express the powerful simplicity of an ancient temple.
- Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway. This former railway station is now a museum that pays tribute to the men and women who have won the Nobel Peace Prize.
