This week I'm driving south, where I hope to sample some American antebellum architecture. With majestic Greek pillars, balconies, formal ballrooms, and imposing staircases, those old homes remind me of Tara, the romantic home in Gone With the Wind. Of course, there's nothing glamorous about the history behind these homes.

“Of course, there’s nothing glamorous about the history behind these homes.”
I recently signed up for your newsletter hoping to learn more about architecture, specifically antebellum. What I have learned so far is that the author apparently is burdened by a missplaced sense that she has to pass judgement on a society that existed 200 years ago. If you think you need to pass judgement, why dont you stay in your new england neighborhood.
Architecture is about history as much as it is about beauty, functionality, and notoriety. What I like about this website is the broad range of topics presented within a historical context. Pass judgment? What makes you think that Jackie, who I know to be born and raised in the South, now lives in New England?
