A Cape is a Cape is a Cape... Isn't it? Sometimes it's hard to tell.
As I collected photos for our new Cape Cod Photo Gallery, I was amazed at the the variety. The Cape Cod style has come a long way from those little houses built by New England settlers. But look beyond the sidelights, patterned brick, and other embellishments, and you'll see - these charming homes are Cape Cods to the core.

It’s a shame that contractors throughout New England STILL build increasingly cheaper versions of these things and, in the process, dilute the integrity of the original examples. New England needs to move on and get its head out of the colonial period and join the architectural design evolution that has been going on for the last 250 years in this country. We have enough examples of original “Cape”, “Colonial”, “Federal” (whatever) to stop producing ersatz replicas. Innovate. Evolve. Adapt. These are all ways to improve, but I see little if any of this in modern examples.
