American architect and civil engineer John Roebling, famous for his ingenious use of wire rope, was born on June 12, 1806. He is best known for designing the Brooklyn Bridge and other important suspension bridges. But, hey, don't forget that his firm also created that wonderful wire toy, the Slinky.
