Cathedral Without Walls
Monday May 25, 2009
America's Memorial Day, celebrated on May 25 this year, is an ideal time to seek out those special places that inspire awe and reflection. I'm headed to Rindge, New Hampshire to explore Cathedral of the Pines, a hill-top sanctuary designed for spiritual renewal.
Set on 200 acres of pine forests, Cathedral of the Pines includes:
- An open-air non-denominational worship space that can seat 2,000 guests
- The Women's Memorial Bell Tower, with bronze bas-relief figures designed by artist Norman Rockwell and sculpted by his son Peter
- The Altar of the Nation constructed with stones from homes, libraries, or gravesites of U.S. presidents
- The Mother's Chapel, an outdoor church and garden
