Monday April 6, 2009
In addition to the devastating loss of lives, the earthquake in central Italy has damaged or demolished many historic structures, some dating from the Renaissance and Medieval times.
The New York Times reports that the Porta Napoli, built in 1548 in honor of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, has been completely destroyed.
Seriously damaged are:
- The dome of the Duomo Cathedral of San Massimo in the center of L'Aquila
- Rear section of the Romanesque basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L'Aquila
- Third floor of the National Museum of Abruzzo, a 16th-century castle
- Baths of Caracalla in Rome, built in the third-century AD.
- Damage to Historical Monuments ‘Significant’ (NY Times)
