Celebrating the Brooklyn Bridge

Saturday January 3, 2009
The Brooklyn Bridge Construction of the Brooklyn Bridge began on this day, January 3, in 1870. The bridge was designed by John Augustus Roebling, who is also famous for his role in creating the popular wire "slinky" toy. Roebling died before construction began, so the bridge was built under the supervision of Roebling's son and daughter-in-law, Washington and Emily Roebling.

For awhile, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world, and the first to use steel wire instead of iron.

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most beautiful treasures that New York City has to offer. I’ve walked over it once myself and hope to do it again soon. There a lot of good historical information on this site http://www.brooklynbridgeposters.com. They have a history section about the Roeblings and photographs of the bridge too.
