What is a "Home Designer"?

A visitor in our Forum writes: "I am 16 and going through my major/career options. I want to know the difference between a degree in Home Design and Architecture."

Just to put matters into a more global context: here in England there is no such thing as a ‘professional’ home designer (’home designers’ are generally unqualified charlatans). To use the title ‘architect’ requires at least seven years and three qualifications as well as registration, In Europe it is often necessary only to have two qualifications. Some countries do not allow anyone except a qualified and registered architect to design buildings.
My advice as a chartered architect member of the Royal Institute of British Architects is that if you have ambitions of international work don’t settle for anything less than ‘registered architect’ as ‘professional home designer’ is meaningless outside of the USA.
