Are Schools Too Gothic?
Tuesday September 23, 2008
Writing for the Chronicle of Higher Education, architecture critic Lawrence Biemiller calls modern-day Gothic-inspired buildings the "worst thing that ever happened to campus architecture." He suggests that too many colleges are trying to achieve the look of prestigious old institutions like Oxford, but using shoddy construction and clunky design.
Biermiller asks why so many colleges mimic the past instead of looking to the future. But, what about the truly progressive thinking that went into buildings like Frank Gehry's Fisher Center at Bard College and Norman Foster's Cambridge Law Library? What's happening at your school?
