It’s interesting how the future of Internet connectivity interplays with the fabric of our lives. People are building entire structures based around terminals.
When I first started out creating architectural renderings for my business (www.lunarstudio.com) and hobby, computer spaces were more of a second thought. Now, I see more and more clients on a daily basis wanting to demonstrate how their spaces are interconnected.
Presently, classrooms and buildings are pretty much stuck with being wired – architects and interior designers are designing large spaces to accommodate loads of cabling and desks. As wireless Internet becomes a more proven technology, we will continue to see how spaces evolve around this form of communication.
In the future, all we may be able to see is nothing other than a screen inset into a wall and that will be our workstations. Heavy processing of applications may even take place remotely over remote servers reducing the need for additional clutter (actually, it’s already being done with tools such as Google Apps.)
I recently had a client that wanted a rendering of a futuristic space to be shown as being completely wireless, but he also wanted a high-tech look and feel. The interior rendering turned into a complicated image – trying to convey, create, and render a very clean space free of wires and computers yet make it seem like it was all connected without being tangled up. The only thing I could really show was a simple OLED type of display mounted to a very simple table.
In my opinion, the future looks very clean…
