How Many Years to Become an Architect?

Sunday July 20, 2008
A reader from Cape Town, South Africa sends an email, wondering about the best course of study for his son. Now that the young man has completed secondary school, should he work toward a Bachelor's degree in architecture?

Tough question! Some students enroll in a 4-year Bachelor's degree program, and then remain in school an extra 2- or 3- years for a Master's degree in architecture. Other students enroll in a 5-year program that leads directly to a Master's in architecture. Which is best? Here are some resources to help with the decision:

  • Careers in Architecture

  • Choosing an Architecture School

  • Career Outlook for Architects
  • Also, you can get some great advice from seasoned pros by posting your questions in our architecture forum
