Why Neo-Gothic?

In the early 1920s, the Chicago Tribune wanted to build the "most beautiful office building in the world." Yet, out of all the proposals submitted to their competition, they selected a conservative Neo-Gothic design by architects Raymond Hood and John Howells. Why Neo-Gothic?
