Teach Kids About Green Architecture

Saturday April 12, 2008
In the United States, April 13 through 29 is National Environmental Education Week, when schools offer special programs to introduce students to concepts of green architecture and environmentally-friendly, sustainable development. For teaching ideas, check out these lesson plans from the Alliance to Save Energy:

  • Energy-Efficient Homes (PDF file)
High school students analyze factors that influence the energy efficiency of a home design, including home orientation, space planning, ventilation, heating, cooling, lighting and appliances, water heating, and waste management.
  • Insulation: Keeping Heat In or Out (PDF file)
Students compare different home insulation materials and determine the best material for insulating against heat loss and gain.
  • A Home Energy Audit (PDF file)
Students learn to identify the major construction, maintenance, and design features that make a building energy efficient.
