Tuesday July 24, 2007
Mystery House 1840 – Craftsman or Prairie This charming California home has lots of Craftsman features, but the long low shape of a Prairie Style house. What is it?

The question is kind of meaningless; it’s not an either/or. There are thousands of properties that have equal measures, or aspects of different movements, especially when the styles are very closely related, as Prairie and Craftsman styles are. Certainly many Craftsman homes are also Western Sticks, and many late Victorian Queen Anne houses are also strongly Tudor or Craftsman (just because Craftsman was a reaction against Victorianism, philosophically, doesn’t mean that the aesthetic didn’t overlap – English A&C is very strongly Victorian!).

This house has aspects of the Southern Craftsman style, and a little bit of Prairie as well, in that wide dormer and the horizontal layout of the porch. Nice looking place.
