New York's Tallest Building Turns 76
Tuesday May 1, 2007
Seventy-six years sounds like a long time, but after all these years, the Empire State Building is still the tallest building in New York City. Opening on May 1, 1931, the Art Deco skyscraper towered over all of New York until the World Trade Center Twin Towers were constructed in 1970. Then, after the Twin Towers were destroyed in 2001, the Empire State Building became New York's tallest again. When it is completed, the new World Trade Center skyscraper, Freedom Tower, will become the tallest building in New York City, and one of the tallest in the world.
