How To Find Used Building Parts

Monday July 17, 2006
Even if you're building a brand new house, you can use old stuff. Antique doorknobs, plumbing fixtures, and stained glass windows will add instant character... and you can often buy these these inexpensively at a place that sells architectural salvage. The last time I visited the "historic parts warehouse" in my town, I found a marble fireplace mantel rescued from a law library.

If you can't find what you need in your in your area, try shopping online. Many of these Architectural Salvage Centers have catalogs on the Web.

Also, if there's a particular item you're searching for, be sure to post your request in our discussion forum. Hey, you never know!
