Arts and Crafts with a Western Flair
Thursday July 13, 2006
In the American West, Arts and Crafts architecture takes on a quirky, frontier flavor. Take the sprawling Riordan Mansion in Flagstaff, Arizona. Outside it looks a bit like a log home, but the 13,000 square foot building is actually two houses with an enormous common room known as "the cabin." And, the walls aren't really logs. Riordan Mansion is frame construction sided with ponderosa pine rounded slab planks. Arts and Crafts details mingle with all sorts of surprises, like the boat-shaped dining room with a table shaped like a canoe.
