Architect Fathers

Sunday June 18, 2006
Today is Father's Day in the United States, and lately I've been reflecting the role architect parents play in shaping the lives and career choices of their children. Recently the classical composer Michael Torke mentioned that his architect father was always remodeling the family home with a careful eye toward balance and harmony. These elements - also important in musical composition - helped Michael Torke shape his own career in music.

Nathaniel Kahn, son of architect Louis I. Kahn, attempted to unravel the complicated personal life of his famous father in a noted film called My Architect. Louis I. Kahn designed some of the world's most important buildings, kept three families with many children, and eventually died penniless in a public restroom. We can only assume that the son, Nathaniel Kahn, did not receive a legacy of balance and harmony. On the other hand, Nathaniel Kahn did grow up to become a creator of respected films.

Did you grow up in a family of architects, builders, or designers? How were you affected by the work of your parents? Tell us!
