Mystery House 2286 - Needs Curb appeal Built in 1948, this cozy Ranch home has lots to offer, but the owners would like to add some pizazz. How can they spiff up the place? Here's a quick checklist of features to consider:
• Exterior Paint Color
• Exterior Siding
• Landscaping
• Porch
• Windows
• Additions
• Covered Parking

• Exterior Paint Color
It would depend on the region where you live if the house is in the north half of the US dark colors would absorb the sun and would cut down on the use of the furnace in the winter. If you live in the south then you would want to reflect the heat and use light colors. This general idea should be translated into the roofing materials as well.

• Exterior Siding
Many people like the idea of using vinyl siding but the cost may prohibit the use of it.

• Landscaping
Move the bird feeder either to the other side, or even better move it to the back of the house. Cut the grass from around the base of the trees and put in some bark. This makes for a more healthy tree and adds appeal. The plantings on the front porch need to be trimmed down and thinned out. The parts that are thinned out can be transferred to the other side and would bring a balance to the house. Think about adding some perennials with color like marigolds or geraniums. If you are able add a border to the front by planting a small hedge or a small 18″ white picket fence.

• Porch
Cover the metal post tie and use a white wood column to lighten the entry and to make it more appealing from the road. The Light I would suggest you use a brass colored light that would again make someone feel airy and more welcome.

• Windows
If you up grade and use your current tax credits go with the best energy efficient you can find and afford. Also I would add some fake shutters that would again add to the curb appeal and make it feel more like a home people would wish to visit.

• Covered Parking
If the goal is to sell this property then you should keep up with Jones and add the Garage and clean up the left side house. The picture is not to clear of the lay out, but I would think there is a driveway there that becomes a dumping ground for what ever.
