Backyard Paradises

We can't all build the Taj Mahal, but anyone with a tiny plot of land or even a balcony or rooftop can create a mini-paradise. All it takes is some old tin cans or a pink flamingo or a scrap of chicken wire plus a LOT of creativity. The Independent Television service has launched a new Web site called Off The Map that explores the weird world of visionary backyard artists. Click on a map and you can see a homespun castle in France, a whirligig garden in North Carolina, or eight other oddball places.
