Michael Graves Re-Invents Virginia
Saturday April 30, 2005
I grew up in Virginia, so I'm used to grand old plantation homes with wide columns and Greek Revival pediments. But the new Museum of the Shenandoah Valley sure doesn't look like the Virginia I remember! "The fact that you have a museum in this territory that is not focusing on Robert E. Lee one more time is significant," architect Michael Graves told CNN. The building Graves designed does have some classical elements, but it is thoroughly modern with typical Gravesian touches like the just-for-fun spindles jutting from the long portico.
