Christo's Gates: Art, Architecture, Or Trash?

Tuesday February 22, 2005
The Gates in Central Park In less than a week, the 7,500 bright orange gates in New York's Central Park will be dismantled. The colorful, controversial art installation by Christo and Jeanne-Claude was designed to be enjoyed (or scorned) for only sixteen days. Strolling through these festive structures, you might ask yourself, is this sculpture, painting, or theater? The creators, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, say the Central Park Gates are a little bit of everything, including architecture and urban design.

• Slide Show: Christo's Gates
• The New York Times Reports: The Gates, Central Park
• Commentary: Seeing Orange, How can Christo and Jeanne-Claude justify the environmental impact of "The Gates" in Central Park?
• You Tell Us: What do you think of Christo's Gates?

If the enormous Gates in Central Park seem just a bit too absurd, you might enjoy viewing a comical installation created by Geoff Hargadon in his Massachusetts home. Hargadon calls his miniature project The Somerville Gates.
